Cadiz Steenberg Classic 2014

Wow, what an amazing Classic week!
Not only is the Classic the highlight on our club’s calendar, but it is undoubtedly the highpoint for all of the staff too. We absolutely love seeing how happy all the members and guests are and what a terrific buzz and spirit fills the clubhouse and fairways. It makes all our hard effort so worthwhile and is a testament to our fantastic staff culture and team spirit that it all comes together seamlessly after 7 months of planning.

Thank you to those who participated and contributed so generously to the Classic charity fund and for making it another successful year. Thanks to the sponsors and members without whom it would not happen. For those of you that missed out, we hope you are able to make it in 2015.

Steenberg Moves Up In All Categories
This month saw Golf Digest publish their golf course rankings for 2014 and Steenberg moved up in all categories. The golf course moved up 5 places from 36th to 31st while the course conditioning moved from 13th to 12th in South Africa and from 3rd to 2nd best conditioned course in the Western Cape. Having been voted one of the finest golfing experiences in the world, we have always focussed mainly on the overall experience, but at the same time improving the golf course where we can.

We are very pleased that all the effort and programmes that we have put into our turf maintenance programmes is paying off and that we have been recognised for it. This is a wonderful testament to our greenkeeping staff who works tirelessly in ensuring the best conditioned course possible on any given day. We have several plans with regards to course upgrades for 2014 & 2015 as we are redoing all our bunkers; changing the strategy of a few holes and upgrading the irrigation and drainage systems. While it is not our intention to be the best course in the country, it is our philosophy to have the best conditioned course that a golfer walks away from having had a fun test of golf on world class facilities while experiencing exceptional service.

new hole 6
The beautiful new 6th hole at Steenberg
Changes to the course

After the successful changes to our 1st and 2nd holes, the construction moved to the 6th and 7th holes.

The 6th hole has always been a terrific hole, but our management and committee felt that we could improve it significantly by removing the waste area which flanked the left side of the fairway and replace it with strategic mounding and two fairway bunkers set into these mounds. The end result was better than we imagined as not only is the hole framed better, but the shot value off the tee has improved significantly. Similarly, the landing area for the longer hitter has got tighter and this might result in the decision of a 3 wood off the tee to the wider landing area.

For those of you who have played our 7th hole before, it will be one of the great holes that sticks out in your memory as it is not only an island green, but also one of our two signature holes. Unfortunately, the drainage of the surrounding bunker had been compromised through the years by the rising dam level and thus the retaining wall was raised and a new bunker was put on top of the old one. The first 15m of the bunker were also closed in thus reducing the size of the bunker. The result has been terrific and I am sure you will enjoy it when you are next here.

When asked about the changes, Ian Kennedy, Steenberg’s Director of Golf said the following: “We are continually looking at ways to improve ourselves in all areas whether it is in our service levels, cultural practices or enhancements to the course layout. Currently we have been spending more resources on the course as we felt it necessary to improve our weaknesses while making it tougher and more strategic for the better player. Our next projects on the 11th and 12th holes are great examples of how the changes have been done with this intention too. We are exceptionally pleased with Golf Data’s construction team and the results which they have produced.”
